How did the global COVID-19 pandemic affect the world’s leader approval rating? Your answer would probably be a negative impact.
Surprisingly, during the observed period of Jan to Apr this year, Yam K.C. et. al (2020) identified a rise in presidential approval rating for many countries. The rise is in particular significant in #Australia, #Canada, #France, #Germany, #UnitedKingdom and #UnitedStates. Aggregating the 11 countries, the trend is also apparent shown on the top left.
While the pandemic is ongoing, it would be difficult to draw a conclusion on the effect of leader rating. However, the pandemic shock did provide an opportunity for country leaders to show their leadership and reaction to the plague. When the COVID situation has not yet turned badly, leaders could easily get points at the inception.
As time passes while the situation has not improved, the effect would be normalized and people would feel dissatisfied. For most of the above countries, approval rates of the country leader are going down. Some of them even go below the start of outbreak.
