Different air pollutants exhibit two different trends. Industrial fine particulates PM 2.5 and PM 10 show a large reduction in Feb, while Ozone level dropped a lot starting from May to July. The reason for the latter is simple: the COVID lockdown. Ozone is generally referred to a “secondary” air pollutants where its emergence is linked to some “primary” air pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx) or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These primary air pollutants are usually caused by heavy traffic. During lockdown period, traffics are limited, thus reducing the production of ozone.
The reasons for the former one could be complicated, and multiple. One contributing factor would be the increasingly effective Government action to meet EU clean air initiative. Also, the continual shift of factories and industry paradigm moves the economy to be more environmentally-friendly.
